“Pompous asshole,” hissed Gordon to Mitzi.

“Do you think you beat him?” she asked, rubbing his arm to calm him.

“Well, of course. The people of this island are tired of his weak-assed shenanigans. They need someone with bold leadership. Someone who will get things done.”

“Like what?”

“Well, roll up their sleeves and get to work, of course.”

“Doing what?”

“Taking care of business on the island.”

“Jesus, you still don’t know, do you.”

“Shhh! These people don’t need to hear that. I’m counting on their willingness to accept any old line of bullshit. Besides, most of the wives will vote the way their husbands tell them to.”

“Since when?”

“Since always. That’s how Mother and Father did it too.”

“Well, it’s not the way I do it.”

“Do you mean you didn’t vote for me?”

“Of course I did,” she said—she hadn’t—kissing him on his cheek, and patting his arm. “By the way, I’m going to Kalamazoo to visit Mother this weekend.”

“But it will be my first weekend as President.”

“Oh, I’m sure it will. And you’ll be plenty busy. You won’t need me underfoot.”

“What about the inaugural ball?”

“Can you schedule it for after I get back?”

He sighed. “I suppose so. But it won’t be the same without you.”
